Rye's Landscapes and Landmarks: Illustrations by Whitman Bailey

  • Rye Historical Society 1 Purchase Street Rye, NY, 10580 United States (map)

Square House Museum | Council Room

Join us on November 19th for the opening of a new exhibit featuring the artwork of celebrated artist and illustrator Whitman Bailey. Commissioned by Rye Chronicle editor Howard Archer in 1924, Bailey documented many of Rye's historic landmarks, including the Square House, with distinctive black and white drawings created with original copper print blocks, all carefully preserved in our Archives collection. These images offer a portrait of Rye in the early twentieth century, and are juxtaposed with contemporary photographs taken by Rye resident and Professor Emeritus Jim Frank.

This exhibit is in recognition of Rye resident Paul Hicks for his long-standing dedication to preserving Rye's history.
