Rye Historic Marker Program
Homeowners can celebrate Rye history by participating in our Historic Marker Program. If your home was built before 1942, the year Rye became a city, you can purchase a bronze marker to be placed on your home.
Guidelines
Included Structures
● Homes built prior to 1942, when Rye City was incorporated, that maintain most of the original architectural style
● Structures or sites of architectural or artistic significance or associated with a person or event of historical significance to the city, state, region or nation

Program Basics
● Voluntary
● Involves no restrictions whatsoever
● Program is not tied to City of Rye, State or federal landmark laws or historic designations. Eligibility for a marker does not make a home eligible for any tax incentives or other benefits available for historic properties
Markers
● Includes name of homeowner (or name of home if available)
● Includes year built (or circa if exact year is not known)
● Rye Historical Society name at the bottom
● 7” x 5” oval cast in bronze
Process
● Interested homeowners should complete an application available at the Square House or on our website: ryehistory.org/support
● Submit completed application to gretchen.snyder@ryehistory.org or at the Square House
● If homeowners do not have documents establishing the year their home was built, applicants can request assistance from the Rye Historical Society. Please visit ryehistory.org/research-requests-1 if you need research assistance.
● Homeowners will be notified when their application has been reviewed and when markers have been ordered. Process will take at least 6 – 8 weeks for review and marker production. Markers can be picked up at the Square House Museum.
Cost
● The fee for the marker is $300 for Rye Historical Society members; $350 for non-members.
● Payment can be made either by check payable to the Rye Historical Society or online (ryehistory.com/support) when application is submitted.
