1774: Reflections on a long year of Revolution Thursday, May 9, 2024, 6:30pm – ONLINE

The Rye Historical Society, in partnership with the Institute of History, Archaeology, and Education, along with the esteemed Rye Free Reading Room, warmly invites you to a special evening featuring Dr. Mary Beth Norton. Dive into a captivating virtual discussion centered around her latest book, 1774: The Long Year of Revolution.

Dr. Norton will shine a light on the often-overlooked events between the so-called “Boston Tea Party” (known at the time as “the destruction of the tea”) in December 1773 and the beginnings of the war in April 1775. This critical period is usually overshadowed in revolutionary scholarship, but Dr. Norton will reveal its significance in understanding the origins of the Revolution and the final breakdown of the relationship between the American colonies and Great Britain.

Learn about the pivotal meeting held on August 10, 1774, likely at the Square House, in response to the Boston Tea Party, and the formation of a committee supporting the Continental Congress in Philadelphia and protesting taxation without representation.
