"A Disappearing World"- Living History Program

Learn about the Algonkian-speaking Native American tribes living around Rye and the changes to their lifestyle from contact with the European colonists. The founding settlers of Rye purchased Manursing Island from a local Mohegan tribe for jackets and wampum. We’ll learn how to make wampum and why it had value. We’ll learn about customs surrounding war, adoptions, alliances, and marriages made among the Europeans, Natives, and Africans.

This is a Family Program suitable for older children and interested parents. And it’s free!
